What do Dodge, Ford, General Motors and Aston Martin have in common—they all use T56 transmission in their cars. This six speed manual transmission is used for cars that are known for their speed and high performance on the road.

With the exception of the Cobra, a hydraulic clutch is used and the entire case, as well as the bell housing, is made from aluminum. The T56 transmission in General Motors and Ford cars use brass synchros in the synchromesh and stainless steel synchros in cards made by Dodge. This transmission also has internal stops, eliminating the need for stopbolts on the shifter mechanism.

Brief History of the T56 Transmission

Borg Warner originally designed and built the T56 transmission for the Dodge Viper. In 1992, General Motors began using it for its generation II and future engines.

As of 1998, Tremec took over building the T56, but left it as is without changing anything. Now the Tremec T56 transmission has somewhat been upgraded by the Tremec TR-6060 transmission, which is now used in vehicles where greater strength is needed.
